Tips to Keep your Creativity Flying High

40+ years of expertise & experience come with a few benefits.

1. Anything is Possible with the Right Team

You meet a lot of interesting people along the way in the creative fields. Our studio is always looking to collaborate with other artists, designers, engineers, and fabricators, but inevitably we encounter someone who thinks our chosen path forward is just not possible. It’s important to heed objective outside advice, but it’s even more important to find and surround yourself with creative collaborators that don’t just express doubt, but also provide new ideas for a way forward.

2. “You Are What You Settle For”

This quote comes from the inimitable Janis Joplin, and it’s a reminder that in the end, your results depend on when you’ve decided that something is “good enough”. The curse of the creative professional, of course, is that nothing is ever truly finished; in a perfect world without schedules or deadlines, the art could always be better. Since every project must eventually come to completion, use this drive for perfection as an impetus to make the next project even better than the last. The artist’s journey is never complete, but the heights we reach will continue to grow with each new success.

3. See the World from the User’s Perspective

Caught in a crossroads with a design decision? Not sure in which direction to proceed? Sometimes we can get trapped in our own headspace. This is when it can be a good idea to put yourself in the position of your intended user. For instance, when we design for our youngest users, babies and toddlers, we convene design meetings on the floor so we can embrace the perspective of the little people who will ultimately be taking control of the space. A new perspective allows for design breakthroughs.

4. Cultivate Creative Conditions

Our studio is our play pen. Every surface of our space in Richmond, California is adorned with the results of decades of engagement and play in the worlds of art, science, and design. Every object has a story to tell, and in so doing, another story to inspire.

5. Collaboration Yields Inspiration

Our tight-knit team of artists and designers takes inspiration from one another’s extensive and diverse experiences, and this is reflected in the space we share. An openness to new ideas and creative solutions is evident in the panoply on display.
